Jesus tells us in our passage this week in Matthew 7:13-14:
“‘Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it.’”

We understood coming into this series on the Sermon on the Mount that the discipleship relationship it would put before us was not one of “cheap grace”, meaning that there’s more to Jesus than simply that he has saved us from sin. But that his call to us moves daily through forgiveness to obedience to his Lordship and imitation of his example.

Just like with last week’s passage, we need to remember that he is speaking here to those listening to this call to his discipleship. These are not simply words of advice to the world, but the call to follow him to the cross. And while we might expect that this call might weed out the unwilling, Jesus goes ahead and tells us that this is the case in this passage.

We know that in life, often good things come with difficulty. Cute babies take nine months of stretching, growth, and then a painful delivery process. The warm spring comes after hard winters. Harvest, fruit, and produce come after the hard work of cultivation, farming, and toil in the sun. While we understand that the grace of God is available to all, we know that not all will accept the path that’s offered.

Community Retreat 2012

It's near-time for our fourth annual North Street Community Retreat. We're really excited! There is something about spending extended time with one another that helps us know each other better than an hour or two at a time. Here are some more details:

EVERYONE is invited to come! This is the weekend of President’s Day (so Monday 2/20 is a holiday) and the hope is to spend extended time with one another. The ‘programming’ will be minimal to maximize our fellowship together...just getting to know one another better. We will have a special time of worship together on Sunday morning and no gathering of worship in Hingham that day. We invite everyone to come to worship on Sunday and stay for lunch, even if you're not planning on staying over night.
We will head together to Windsor Hills Campground just outside Hillsboro, NH. We'll be staying in "the Inn." You can also visit this site for directions to the campground.
Costs include all food (8 meals!) and overnights (3 nights!) in hotel-quality rooms with individual bathrooms.
The shared costs figure out as follows:

$140/person, assuming double occupancy
$70/child (4-12)
$190/person, single occupancy (but double up and save!)
$90 for one night if anyone can only go for one night. (Further nights can be added later for the full amount, but not the other way around. i.e. If one pays the full amount, it cannot be reduced during the actual weekend of the retreat.)

The church board has agreed that we want everyone who wants to go...to go. So we’re asking for people to pay as much as they can of the above rates and even more if possible to help out with those who can’t pay the whole amount. If you are thinking of not going simply based on finances...please speak with Pastor Jeremy! We want to try and work it out.
Please sign up on the sheet on the welcome pulpit (or e-mail Pastor Jeremy) and pay at least a deposit ($30/per person) ASAP. All payments can be submitted in the offering boxes (but mark it clearly!). Total amount due is due the Sunday prior to our leaving (2/12).

As we continue in this series, we come to Jesus’ words: “Ask...search...knock!” And coupled with it is what has been traditionally called The Golden Rule: “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:7-12)

Quite often, we regard the first part as instructions for prayer. But prayer is more than “requesting” from God. In fact, Jesus has already taught us to pray in the Sermon on the Mount when he gave us what we call “The Lord’s Prayer” (Matthew 6:5-15) But this section is about quests and requests, which may be a part of prayer in general, but the distinction for us in what Jesus has already called prayer and what he doesn’t call prayer here is important.

So at this point, we need to remember that Jesus is talking to disciples: those who follow him. Disciples are seekers of his Kingdom and seekers of the Kingdom will seek Kingdom things. Why wouldn’t God give his Kingdom citizens the things that we seek in fulfilling the revealing of his Kingdom in and through and around us?

So if this is prayer, it’s crucial to pray for God’s will to come through us - through who we are and what we’d ask for...before we even ask. Would the Father deny that which is both good for us and his Kingdom?

Welcome back to the Words to Build a Life On series, focusing on the Sermon on the Mount. We took a six-week break for Advent & Christmas, and now we’ll finish up this series in the next seven weeks.

Our main passage for this week is actually only one verse: Matthew 7:6 (read it right now). But each day, we’ll read the whole passage for context. Focusing on a single verse of scripture can be worthwhile, but too much singularization of scripture can prove to be misleading. Imagine if the only thing you knew of your mother was a time she disciplined you or if the only thing someone ever had to remember you by was the time you got in a car accident. There’s much more to an individual or a situation than five minutes or one statement. This is why reading scripture continually and over again helps us find the Word and heart of God.

So this verse is an interesting one and gives us a cliche sometimes heard today: “Don’t throw your pearls before swine.” Which, if we’re thinking pragmatically, might lead us to respond to Jesus: “Um...okay, I’ll be sure not to do that!”

But more than likely, Jesus is not speaking literally. So what is he saying? What are pearls? What is swine? Why would we throw pearls to the pigs? When might we do so unintentionally?

Christmas is upon us! This week will be our last in Advent, leading us to Christmas Sunday. Christ has come...Christ is coming again!

Our main passage this week is Isaiah 52:7-10.

The message is always fresh, but remains the same: God came into the world through the little Christ-child. The scene is always poignant, yet remains simple, humble, and approachable: a mother, a father, a baby, and some visitors. God has come not with human fanfare, but as God would choose: through creation, with the heavens singing praises, but leaving no room for human grandeur as we would know it.

May the picture move us to mimic the scene of the Nativity: not simply on our mantle, side table, or wherever you arrange the figurines so carefully, but in our hearts, to our families, and through our lives to the world:

God has come for you, just as you are.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who announce peace.

...who bring good news.

...who announce salvation.

May the Lord bless you as you seek his Word this week!

Advent 4:

What does it look like when God comes?

December 12-18

We’re more than halfway through Advent at this point. This coming Sunday (the 18th) is the final of the four Sundays. Christ has come...Christ is coming again!

Our main passage this week is 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16.

God is full of surprises. Time and again in the scriptures, God does or says other than that which humans would expect. This passage is from the history of Israel during the reign of King David who, having had many military conquests, has settled in comfortably in a new home at this point. Seemingly admirably so, he suggests that God too needs a better home in which to abide. But God is never to be told what to do or where to reside. That is up to God!

The details of the Christ-child’s entrance into the world are perennially notable during this season: difficult circumstances (a long journey for his father and pregnant mother, genocide), humble characteristics of the “royal” family (baby-child, an unknown mother & father), and the motley crew that came to worship (blue-collar shepherds, educated wise men, asses & sheep, and an angelic choir).

Apparently, God’s continued demonstration to the world when showing up is that grandeur, organization, and human pomp take a very distant back seat to humility, simplicity, and a general spirit of liberty. Palaces, temples, and monuments might send human masses into awe, but God has none of it. God would rather his creation be awed by the relational things of hope, love, joy, and peace, all of which point to a nature of power beyond human desire and display.

Advent Week 3:
What does it look like when God comes?

December 5-11

This week builds us up to the third Sunday of Advent., the season that includes the four Sundays prior to Christmas Day. These weeks serve as a reminder of Israel’s wait for the Messiah prior to Jesus’ appearance on earth as well as a reminder that we wait again today for Christ’s second coming. Christ has come...Christ is coming again!

Our main passage this week is Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11. This passage might be considered the text that Jesus used to preach his first public sermon. As is the case for so many preachers, his first sermon didn’t go too well (see our reading for Thursday). But the result of Jesus’ sermon wasn’t his fault. It was the misunderstanding and hardness of those who heard him.

Jesus was preaching the description that was and is the picture of good news (“gospel”). With Jesus’ arrival in the world as the Son of God, the Incarnation of God, the very embodiment of God within humanity...came the arrival of the very message of God: good news to the poor, the captives, the blind, the oppressed.

This is good news in this season! Christ has come and Christ is coming again - even now - we believe that good news is bursting forth because Christ has come and is coming again.

As you go through this week, pray and seek that you can turn your eyes in such a way to see Christ in the situations around you. What good is happening? In your own life? In the lives of others? Recognizing these things helps us cry with the psalmist: Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’ May the Lord bless you as you seek his Word this week!

We are pleased to present our first-ever recording from musicians from our North Street Church community: cominghome. You can hear a couple of samples on our YouTube channel.

We hope that this humble effort might be the simple beginnings of others to come. This Advent & Christmas CD project is two-fold:

We wanted to provide space for artists to practice and contribute their artistic gifts and talents. A few of own musicians recorded this CD and presented the cover artwork.
Our church has underwritten the costs of this CD and we are giving it away in hopes that it will create awareness about homelessness and our compassionate ministry center: Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore. Anyone who wishes to give to Friends of the Homeless in honor of this project can give online here.

The season of Christmas is well-known as one of giving. The lesser-known preceding season of Advent, among many things, reminds the Christian Church of the Incarnation of God wherein God came and dwelt amongst humanity. Eugene Peterson paraphrases John 1:14 as God having “moved into the neighborhood” through the Word, Jesus Christ. This inhabitant act began the hospitable and compassionate ministry of Christ, one that his followers seek to continue today.

Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore, Inc. provides shelter to those without a home. During the holiday season FHSS oversees an extensive Christmas gifting ministry, providing gifts to hundreds of children and their parents. This short CD was recorded and distributed by the North Street Community Church of the Nazarene with Friends of the Homeless in mind as a small to raise funds and awareness for homelessness.

Advent Week 1:
How do we prepare for God's Coming?

November 28 - December 4

We’re well into Advent now, the season that includes the four Sundays prior to Christmas Day. These weeks serve as a reminder of Israel’s wait for the Messiah prior to Jesus’ appearance on earth as well as a reminder that we wait again today for Christ’s second coming. Christ has come...Christ is coming again!

Our main passage this week is Isaiah 40:1-11. This passage is well-known in great part to its inclusion in Handel’s Messiah, a popular oratorio which is played throughout the world during the Advent & Christmas seasons.

But it’s also the passage that begins the Gospel of Mark (Thursday’s reading). We don’t know God’s timing. But we are called to always be prepared and preparing for his coming in and through our lives each and every day. God’s coming isn’t simply the first Advent (Jesus’ coming at Christmas) or when Jesus will come again (the “second coming”), but rather, we understand that the world is bursting forth each day for and with the presence of God. So in a way, God “comes” to and through us all the time.

Our hope and our call is to be ready for this. So how do we prepare for God’s coming? What does it “take”? Can we do anything about it? For it? As you pray and read this week, consider what it means to “prepare the way of the Lord.” What does it mean for you as an individual? For your family? For our church?

Advent Week 1: Is God Hiding?

November 21 - 27

We’re building up to Advent, Week 1...Can you believe it?! Advent is the season that includes the four Sundays prior to Christmas Day (which is on a Sunday itself this year). These weeks serve as a reminder of Israel’s wait for the Messiah prior to Jesus’ appearance on earth as well as a reminder that we wait again today for Christ’s second coming. Christ has come...Christ is coming again!

Our main passage this week is Isaiah 64:1-9. This passage paints a picture where the people of God are separated from God, even describing God as having “hidden” his face. It’s brutally honest: praying for God to show up: “Oh, that you would tear open the heavens and come down!”

It’s a fitting prayer for the beginning of the season of Advent. Do you ever feel like God isn’t around? Doesn’t care about you or the world you live in? Do you have feelings like our culture, society, or the nation in which we live is just completely God-forsaken?

The people of Israel were waiting for a Messiah for a long time. Jesus Christ came at a point when they were again under the rule of a pagan empire. They were split into sects: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots, and others - all people who thought they were doing things “right,” but each one off in various ways. Do you see any similarities for the people of God (the Church) today as we wait for Christ to come again?

“Seek first the Kingdom of God...”

If you do nothing else this week through this Community Scripture Way, dwell upon the above: what it means for you to search for and after the Kingdom of God before all else. To drive it home, here are some other ways it’s been said:

“Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness...”

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else.”

“Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions.”

“Seek first God's kingdom and what God wants.”

Simply reading Jesus’ admonitions about these things probably won’t help. So how can you move these words into action? Prayerfully consider this before God, asking him that by his Spirit, you might fulfill what Christ has called you to in specific ways. There’s a great prayer on the back of this that you can feel free to use each day.

We move into the second of three weeks in this section (6:19-34). Last week we thought about how life can become cluttered, making it more difficult to see with Kingdom eyes (6:22-24). This week, we will look at the famous “do not worry” passage with the lens of what it might look like to actually do that. Next week, we will stay in the same passage, but with the lens of Kingdom-living via the Lordship of Christ. Remember that this whole section relates to what controls us. We began this series the Sermon hoping that we would see what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Here, Jesus is essentially talking about Lordship.

As you prayerfully read this week, searching for God’s Word (“message” to you), consider the things that make you worry. Your job? Your schooling? Your family? Kids? Spouse? Pets? Friends? War? Sickness? Depression? The End Times? Perhaps the things that Jesus himself mentions: Food? Clothing? ...Your body?

Simply reading Jesus’ admonitions about these things probably won’t help. So how can you move these words into action? Prayerfully consider this before God, asking him that by his Spirit, you might fulfill what Christ has called you to in specific ways.

While Matthew 6:22-24 is our main focus this week, we’re reading the whole section (6:19-34) each day to remain in the context of what Jesus is saying. This whole section relates to what controls us. We began this series the Sermon hoping that we would see what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Here, Jesus is essentially talking about Lordship.

What is a “lord”? A lord is someone who is in complete control of another person. Jesus doesn’t talk about other people in this passage, but he is demonstrating how things other than God can become our Lord: that which owns us.

In verse 22, the word that Jesus uses that’s usually translated “healthy” in describing the eye could also be understood as “clear.” So we might read Jesus this way, “if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.”

So we understand Jesus to be talking about our lives and how all sorts of things that can occupy our lives (through our body, mind, heart, etc.) can weigh us down from being free to see, respond to, and participate in the Kingdom of God by Christ’s Lordship.

As always, read and fast prayerfully before God, asking him that by his Spirit, you might fulfill what Christ has called you to.

After having given instruction for the things of charity and prayer, Jesus now invites us to fast. What is “fasting”? While understandings of the practice will vary widely and we might go beyond what Jesus is talking about, we can assume that he is specifically referring to the practice of abstaining from food and/or drink for a period of time (not eating/drinking). This is done as a way of placing our dependence on God, rather than food.

The Bible is full of examples of God’s people fasting. We’ll read some of them as we go through our passages this week. Note what fasting is: dependence on God. ...and what it isn’t: dieting or otherwise trying to weed something out of our lives. Reduction of unhealthy activity may indeed (and likely should!) occur as a result of placing our dependence on God, but it is a bi-product of obedience to God, not the intended result. Nor is it, as Jesus reminds us in our main passage for the week, a way to draw attention to ourselves, whether we might be tempted to seek either honor or pity. Instead, again...it is that we would find ourselves dependent upon God for all things (even our “daily bread”), and be so rewarded.

Perhaps you yourself have practiced some sort of fast in the past. Whether you have or haven’t, I want to invite you this week to “practice the passage” by fasting. Pick a meal, once a day or once for the week, and replace what you usually do with time spent before God, ingesting what he would grant to you.

As always, read and fast prayerfully before God, asking him that by his Spirit, you might fulfill what Christ has called you to.

This is where in Matthew we receive what we call the “Lord’s Prayer,” although you’ll note that if the end of the prayer is in your Bible (“For Thine is the Kingdom...”), it’s likely in brackets. Our CSW this week will take a day for each line of the prayer as it is in Matthew. And the supplemental passage for each day will relate to the line for that day:

Tuesday - Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Wednesday - Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Friday - And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Saturday - And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.

In addition, I want to invite you again this week to “practice the passage” in this way: say The Lord’s Prayer every time you think of it. When you wake. When you lie down. When you’re driving. When, for whatever reason, it comes to your mind.

And each day, as you study the line for that particular day, pray about what it means to say that line. Jesus gave us this prayer not just for us to say mindless words (remember what he just told us in verse 7 - “Do not heap up empty phrases.”). But see the Lord’s Prayer as a form to direct you as you pray.

As we continue to the second topic (prayer) in this section on “piety”, we’ll spend two week here. Jesus is still comparing and contrasting what is done with what should be done. We begin with our main passage: Matthew 6:1, 5-8 (prayer in solitude).

What is Jesus saying in this passage? Why would he be concerned with how we pray? Isn’t praying in and of itself enough? What does prayer “do” (what is the function and purpose of prayer)? Is it simply a manner of requesting things from God? Try praying differently this week as you consider these passages (see the back of this sheet for guidance).

As you read these passages, pray that today will be a day of patterning your life after that of Jesus Christ, responding in his new way of the Kingdom of God. Remember to reflect upon each of the passages in light of what Jesus says in our main passage for the week.

Go and do likewise:

A great way to study Jesus’ words is to actually try them.

Are your only times of prayer those with others? Try this week to pray in the times when you’re alone as well. Perhaps this means turning the radio or music off, getting up from the computer for a bit, skipping a television show, or getting up earlier than usual. Take a walk. Find a garden or park or forest. Go to the beach where the waves drown out most of the rest of the noise around you. Go for a drive. There are many ways that you can find yourself alone to pray.

If words are hard to come by, just listen. And try to ignore the other “voices” that remind you of how busy you are and all that you must get done. Remember that Jesus himself often intentionally left the busyness of the crowd to get away and pray to his Heavenly Father.

But remember that whatever you choose, try and practice what Jesus is saying here:

...whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

‘When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

We move into a new section of the Sermon on the Mount this week. While we won’t see the form of the antithesis as we have for the last several weeks, Jesus is still comparing and contrasting what is done with what should be done concerning practicing piety (charity, prayer, fasting, and possessions). We begin with our main passage: Matthew 6:1-4 (charity or “alms-giving”).

“Charity” is generally seen as “giving to the poor” in our society. It is a worthy act of contributing to the needs of those who are in difficult circumstances in life. Jesus specifically says, “When you give alms...”. It can probably be said that we have more opportunity to do this today than any generation ever has. The extensive number of charities and ministries combined with today’s technology provides ways in which we can make our charitable dollar go pretty far. Yet poverty is also as rampant as ever, both near and far.

What is Jesus saying in this passage? Why would he be concerned with how we give? Isn’t giving in and of itself enough? Who is affected by our giving? What is our giving supposed to do? Maybe in preparation for this week’s word, you’d even try practicing what Jesus is saying here (see down below the daily readings for guidance).

Pray about “giving alms” this week and see how the Lord leads you. Jesus and his followers at the time of his ministry on earth couldn’t just go online to a website and give. They were asked for money any time they walked in the public square (not unlike you might experience when walking or driving in Boston). So maybe that’s something you want to go and do this week.

But here are some other great opportunities to give:

Kiva.org is a great way to directly impact individuals. Rather than straight “giving,” Kiva is set up as a small loan distributor for individuals and groups throughout the world.

But remember that whatever you choose, try and practice what Jesus is saying here:
So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

So what does this passage say about your daily interactions with people that you did have? How are your thoughts “killing” the people you come across? Has anyone ever treated you in such a way that just by their actions or words, you feel a bit less of a person? Isn’t this kind of like “killing” a part of you?

Pray that today might be a day when your interactions and relationships are full of reconciliation and love rather than breaking apart and anger. Pray that Jesus and the example of his life might become your own.

Even though we are now out of the beatitudes, we’ll continue to read them each day for this week as the next four verses speak to them as a whole:

"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. "

Salt & light make a difference in their respective functions. They change the situation, even in small amounts. Salt becomes a flavoring agent and light brings new perspective. For Jesus to say that his followers are the agents of change in the world is to say that we will make a difference...people will notice...our presence will change the world.

Pray this day that God will use you to change situations. You may not be Martin Luther King or Mother Teresa, but you can change the small situations around you that people will see and notice, and thus...see Jesus in you.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

The Message puts it this way: “You're blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God's kingdom. Not only that—count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. You can be glad when that happens—give a cheer, even!—for though they don't like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble.”

Mission to M.A.R.S.

Join us as we blast off on our Mission to M.A.R.S.! Each day at Mission Control, the Mission Specialists (kids) follow the out-of-this-world adventures of Zoom Aerospeed and his sister Twila. Both are recruited by NASA to travel to Mars on an interplanetary space adventure. Their journey is closely monitored by Mission Control, who is helping them to keep their eyes on the goal before them. Daily Bible stories from the ministry of Paul are shared with the Mission Specialists by Captain Rex of Mission Control. His job is to carefully guide our Flight Crew toward the final mission of Meeting a Risen Savior.

Discipleship: Following Jesus

It's often said of Ghandi that he uttered these words: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” These are tough words from a man who had a few things in common with Jesus Christ himself, yet didn't claim the title of "Christian" himself. Was he right? How can those who call themselves Christians be so far from what Christ taught? What did Christ teach?

At the heart of Jesus Christ's teaching in the Gospel of Matthew is what tradition calls the "Sermon on the Mount." By the time Matthew tells this part of story of Jesus in the gospel, Christ had already been traveling through the towns, pointing to God through his works of mercy, compassion, and healing. By that point, a good crowd had gathered to follow him. Jesus saw the crowds, sat down, and "taught them."

Eugene Peterson paraphrases part of the conclusion of Jesus' teachings like this: "These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on."

And it's from these passages in Matthew that the Christian martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in his book, The Cost of Discipleship, about the difference between "cheap grace" and "costly grace":

"Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ."..."Costly grace confronts us as a gracious call to follow Jesus, it comes as a word of forgiveness to the broken spirit and the contrite heart. It is costly because it compels [one] to submit to the yoke of Christ and follow him."

These teachings of Jesus come to us in our easy chairs with bold challenges. There is no mincing of words here. When we read the Sermon on the Mount, we are confronted and made to think seriously about what it means to follow Jesus. Are we simply recipients of his great act on the cross, or is it normative and formational for the way that we live?

Our church community is diving into Matthew 5-7 for several months to come. The invitation for all to join in is multi-fold:

Pick a number of days a week to sit down and read Matthew 5-7 in its entirety. Feel free to use a variety of translations or paraphrases of the Bible (BibleGateway.com is a great website for this, or if you have an Android or Mac device, the YouVersion app "Bible" is a wonderful tool).
Come and worship with us as we break open this sermon each week (Sundays, 10:30 AM).
Listen to the sermons online when you're unable to be in the worship gathering.
Read the daily readings from our Community Scripture Way (CSW).

We have been talking for months and even years about discerning together what God has in mission for the North Street Community. We're finally to a season of putting some teeth into this process. Here's where we're at:

Recognizing that...

There is a lack of cohesion and collective identity amongst those who are members of the North Street Community;
God’s call to any specific and localized church community must be discerned within her context, culture, and neighborhood;
We have a core group of people who care about the North Street Community, yet only a handful who are actively engaged more than once a week in the life of our church community;

...this journey is proposed so that:

We can re-member the elements of our community, both in person and in specifics of mission;
We can collectively focus and bring forth a unified church community dedicated to carrying out the mission of God in our context and corner of the world.

The Journey of Discernment

This journey will take several months, led and overseen by Pastor Jeremy (as advised by some peers and mentors). It must be bathed in corporate and individual prayer. It will include an invitation to participate by everyone who expects to be a part of the community in the future. It will include:

Daily Prayer - Individuals have been asked to pick a day of the week to spend a good amount of time in intentional prayer specifically for this discernment journey. Email Pastor Jeremy to sign up for a day.
Discernment Phase 1 - Surveying - A survey has been developed to be prayerfully completed online or in written form by individuals and families, inviting everyone who will participate to do so. Please email or call Pastor Jeremy to begin the survey. All surveys should be completed by January 30th.
Discernment Phase 2 - Group Response & Discussion - Once the survey has been completed, individuals and families will prayerfully gather in a group session to review answers and give clarification. There will be an “outside listener” at each session to aid Pastor Jeremy in the discernment process. The dates and times are quite varied and intentionally so, as to make opportunity for everyone to be able to be present in at least one group discussion. To sign up for a group discussion, please first be sure to complete the survey and then email Pastor Jeremy with the date from below that you can attend. All discussions will be held in the Newell Gathering Room at the chapel.

Discernment Phase 3 - The Heart-Pulse of the Community - Once the groups have been completed, the whole church community will pray with Pastor Jeremy during the Lenten Season as he reviews and discerns the direction in which God is calling us into the future. He will summarize and compile the responses into a comprehensive foundation for developing the outcomes that will lead to a Covenant of Community. (4-6 weeks)

The Intended Outcomes

We hope and pray that a sense of clarity of identity will arise so that we may develop a collective understanding of who we are and who we will be together according to what we think God is calling us to. We hope that the North Street Community will be catalyzed to live more closely together. We hope that an agreed upon Covenant of Community will better foster shared life, collective identity, and a courage boldness together in being the Body and presence of Christ in our context and culture.

A Summer of Films and Discussion on Faith

This summer, we will be reading through Bryan P. Stone's book, Faith and Film: Theological Themes at the Cinema. Dr. Stone takes the lines from the Apostles' Creed and considers each one alongside a popular Hollywood film. We will gather for discussion on each chapter, while for a few of the chapters, we will watch one of the films together.

See below for dates and note even further below the chart for special circumstances or locations.

It should be noted that some of the suggested films are of a rating that some may be wary of viewing. If anyone is unsure, they are encouraged to use the "Parent Guide" at sites like www.imdb.com or www.kids-in-mind.com.

Since the first discussion is coming on short notice, the introduction and first chapter are available online here (.pdf) and will be available at the church building to read while waiting for orders of the book to be shipped. (Everyone should acquire the book on their own.) While reading the book is encouraged and ideal, everyone is welcome to come and join the conversations on any given week.

Lent 2010

Once again, Lent has come upon us. Each year, we've taken part in various aspects of this season. This year is no different.

First off, if you're not too sure what this Lent thing is all about, read this article about the Season of Lent.

Next, you want to ask yourself (and your family or roommates) how you want to participate in Lent. Here are some endeavors that are available through our church community and other traditional practices:

Special Gatherings - Join together with the community for these special times of reflection, worship, or commitment:

24 Hours That Changed the World - We are traveling through this emphasis that looks in depth at the events of Jesus Christ's passion week. Click here for the various ways to dive into these events this year (Sunday sermons, Wednesday group study, a daily reading devotional book, and a full-length book)
Prayer Times - In addition to your own times of prayer, members of our community are invited to join together on Thursdays at 12:20 in the Angell Chapel on the campus of Eastern Nazarene College. We do this as many of our members are on campus during the day as staff or students. These prayer times will last about 20 minutes and are guided as well as individual. These times have been cancelled.
Fasting & Sacrifice - Lent is often a time when followers of Christ remove something from their lives as an act of sacrifice, identity, or submission. The possibilities are endless (like fasting from meat, technology, etc.), but see this article for a great introduction to fasting.

During the season of Lent, we are embarking together in a study called 24 Hours That Changed the World.

There are four ways that you can participate at various levels in this throughout Lent:

1. If you want to dive into the passion story this Lent, come to the worship gathering every Sunday as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Each week we will look at a different event in the passion week:

2. If you want to dive even deeper...come to our Wednesday Evening discussion each week at 7:00 PM (beginning 2/24) to look deeper into each event through a video presentation and discussion.

3. And if you want to dive even more deeply...read the 24 Hours That Changed the World - Forty Days of Reflection daily devotional book throughout the forty days of Lent. If you want a copy of this, be sure and let Pastor Jeremy know by 9:00 AM Friday morning (2/12) as he'll be putting in the order then. A church member is paying for half the cost and shipping, so it'll be $5 if you'd like the book. They will be in time for the Ash Wednesday service.

4. And if you want to dive even deeper still, read the actual book: 24 Hours That Changed the World. We won't be ordering this book for everyone, but you can order it at any major online bookstore.

Christian community inherently implies fellowship, or the act of gathering together in Christian love.

We usually eat together on the third Sunday of the month right after we worship together. While we will sometimes have a theme or celebration for this monthly get together, we generally all just bring a dish and hope it works out. No one’s ever left hungry.

We have various other gatherings throughout the month as well—Men’s Breakfast on the last Saturday morning of the month (8:00 AM). The women of the church get together for craft nights regularly. We will often have game nights or gather at the church building to watch whatever local Boston sports team is dominating the national scene on television. And we sporadically gather together at other times as well.

How to Help in Haiti RIGHT NOW

Brothers & Sisters:

For sure you know about the absolute destruction in Haiti, and the humanitarian crisis that has begun and will continue for the foreseeable future. It's tough to watch, tough to consider, and tough to know what to do. But we can't let that stop our action, even if we, as individuals, can only do a little bit. Together, we can do much more. There will for sure be opportunities to help in the future, but there are dire needs right now.

Money - If you've been watching the news, you've likely heard that the best way to help right now is in cash donations. There are a lot of great organizations through which to do this. The popular ones like the Red Cross, are good. But there are others that we greatly trust, and through whom we know that the funds will be put to good use. Heart-to-Heart International is a great organization that has already sent medical professionals into the area, and hopes to send more soon.

But what we believe is the best organization and is "closest to our heart" is Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. This is the central compassionate arm of the Church of the Nazarene. Members and friends of the North Street Community will know NCM in a number of ways: we sent a team to New Orleans just two years ago through NCM to help re-build after Hurricane Katrina and NCM is a mother organization of our own Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore.

Supplies - Perhaps what NCM does best is come in after the first responders and begin to address the humanitarian crises. We already have directors, leaders, pastors, and feet on the ground in Haiti just waiting for supplies. What we want to do is collect needed items to send to Miami from where they will be shipped to appropriate places in Haiti. Please take a look at this list to see what items are needed. Bring them to the church building on Sunday or anytime before Wednesday evening when we will pack them up to be shipped on Thursday.

If you are so inclined to help monetarily, we could use money to pay for postage to ship these items.

Community Retreat 2010

It's near-time for our second annual North Street Community Retreat! The couple of dozen of us that went last year had a really, really GREAT time. There is something about spending extended time with one another that helps us know each other better than an hour or two at a time. Here are some more details:

EVERYONE is invited to come! This is the weekend of President’s Day (so Monday 2/15 is a holiday) and the hope is to spend extended time with one another. The ‘programming’ will be minimal to maximize our fellowship together...just getting to know one another better. We will have a special time of worship together on Sunday morning and no gathering of worship in Hingham that day.
We will head together to Windsor Hills Campground just outside Hillsboro, NH. We'll be staying in "the Inn." You can also visit this site for directions to the campground.
Costs include all food (8 meals!) and overnights (3 nights!) in hotel-quality rooms with individual bathrooms.
The shared costs figure out as follows:

$135/person, assuming double occupancy
$67.50/child (4-12)
$10/child (0-4)
$350/family (2 adults, 2 children)
$180/person, single occupancy (but double up and save!)

The church board has agreed that we want everyone who wants to go...to go. So we’re asking for people to pay as much as they can of the above rates and even more if possible to help out with those who can’t pay the whole amount. If you are thinking of not going simply based on finances...please speak with Pastor Jeremy! We want to try and work it out.
Please sign up on the sheet on the welcome pulpit (or e-mail Pastor Jeremy) and pay at least a deposit ($30/per person) ASAP. All payments can be submitted in the offering boxes (but mark it clearly!). Total amount due is due the Sunday prior to our leaving (2/7).

Our Annual Lobster Fest is Sunday, September 27th after we worship together in the morning. It'll be an extra special day since that morning in worship Benny Ambler will be dedicated. As usual, we'll purchase lobster together and cover our college students from paying. I’m Jeremy. I get to oversee NSCC as pastor. My wife, Meghan, and I got married in Salisbury, MD on May 31, 2003 just a couple of weeks after we graduated from Eastern Nazarene College. I got a degree in mathematics and Meghan in social work. We soon moved to Kansas City, KS so I could attend Nazarene Theological Seminary. I graduated from NTS with an M. Div. in 2006.

On March 28, 2005, our son Brayden Wesley was born. I had hoped to have two children. But we went ahead and jumped right over that goal on February 1, 2007, when our twin girls Brenna Munro and Brooklyn Gwen were born. And then on November 5, 2009, Brysen Parker was born. These kids are beautiful and...life is busy, tiring, and wonderful all at once.

We moved to Hingham in February of 2006. We love the town and love living here. The historic and stateliness of the Hingham is to be admired. We do, however, feel challenged by living in such a wealthy area. The message of Christ is one that calls us to humility and empathy with those less fortunate. We confess that living here as followers of Christ in a wealthy town in the wealthiest nation in the world is challenging.

Here’s some of who I am: I like to have conversations about God, Christ, and the Spirit. I like idealizing about community and trying to find and live out fresh and genuine truth rather than the plastic illusion of most of what goes on these days in our culture. I acknowledge the extremely difficult movement from ideal to reality. But I press on...

As for enjoying the times of life, I like playing with my kids, playing games (with Meg or online), reading about the above topics and more, listening to music, napping, napping while listening to music, driving, basketball, on-line stuff, and going up to Vermont. (You can find me on Facebook or Twitter.) You can read my thoughts over the last couple of years at my website.

I love watching and following sports, in this order - Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Syracuse Orange, Tiger Woods. I love music, especially music that challenges me. Lately that’s been Derek Webb, Shane & Shane, U2, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, and Jars of Clay. I like to read when I can. In the scriptures, I am particularly challenged by the letter to the Philippians, the gospel of John, and the first letter of John. Other books that have I’ve appreciated recently or in the past include The Lost Letters of Pergamum, the A New Kind of Christian trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Life Together. Perhaps the book that's rocked me the most lately is Bryan Stone's Evangelism after Christendom (it 90% affirmed me and 10% challenged me).

Please feel free to contact me. My prayer for the North Street community and everyone is that our days are found together in Christ. I welcome questions...I go by the mantra that we're all still learning, all still being shaped and formed by grace, and all need to help each other. I ask questions in a quest for what's true and loving and good and invite others to join me in that journey. If we don't seek, we don't find. If we reside in fear, we miss out on love.

The North Street Community is an living organism - a group of people identified in numerous ways. What can we say on a website? The best way to find out who we are is to come and meet us! We worship together every week on Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM. We sometimes worship on Sunday evenings as well, in a gathering we call The Remembrance (for times and dates, see our online calendar). For other times when you might be able to come and meet us, check our fellowship and discipleship pages. Followers of Jesus Christ
We identify with the people called Christians: those who follow Jesus Christ. Simply said, we take his words to “love God and love humanity” to be the central spiritual, ethical, moral, and practical understanding to living in this world.

Church of the Nazarene
We are a local Church of the Nazarene.

New England District Church of the Nazarene
We are a church on the New England District Church of the Nazarene.

Location
While our church building is in the very historic town of Hingham, Massachusetts, we all live in various places throughout the south shore of Boston.

Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore
Several of us are inherently involved with the compassionate ministry center: Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore. FHSS is a transitional sheltering ministry dedicated to providing a place to live for those who have found themselves homeless. This ministry grew out our church in the 1980s and has grown to have different locations around the south shore, totaling over 30 family units.

A disciple is literally a follower of someone. Christian discipleship implies that one is following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Discipleship can take on many shapes and forms. For sure, discipleship does not imply that a follower of Christ is alone—we are all following Christ together. So we read together, talk together, wrestle with issues together, and help each other along, even if we disagree sometimes.

As a part of the North Street community, we have various opportunities to help each other in following Jesus Christ. One of the main backbones of our time together comes in what we call our “community scripture way,” a daily scripture reading plan that leads into discussion and worship together. One of the regular gathering times to talk and discuss scripture with one another is at 9:30 AM on Sunday mornings. Also, on Wednesday evenings, we gather for our weekly corporate scripture study at 7:00 PM, a time for group questions, insight, and discussion. These evenings follow our community scripture way.

From July 12th-October 4th, Pastor Jeremy is preaching a series called American Idols: Identifying that which is keeping us from God and the Kingdom. Come each week and hear a different topic and how, while perhaps not "sin" in and of itself, the given topic can grow to a level where it hinders and even ceases to be part of the Kingdom of God. While not each topic may be a difficult one for you individually, it is surely affecting many others in our American society.

If you're late to the game (coming in the middle of the series at some point), you are encouraged to listen first to the Introduction before jumping in on any one topic. The main leadership body of North Street is the church board. Eight members of the community meet monthly on the first Tuesday of the month to oversee the activity of the church. The board has three main sub-committees: Ministries, Finance & Administration, and Facilities.
In conjunction with the board, North Street has a pastor. Jeremy D. Scott has been pastor & teacher for the North Street Community since February, 2006. Click here to read more about our pastor.
